Universalism and Pluralism:Not All Roads Lead to God

A lot of people today have been distracted from the true revelation of God’s Word. Many have fallen into the trap and heresy of the evil one. Some of these teachings may sound fresh, new, and even progressive, but in reality, they are nothing more than old lies revived to entangle a new generation. The devil has never been creative; he always repeats the same tricks only packaged in a different way seeking to deceive even believers if possible.

In this generation, there are countless distortions of the Gospel, but let us look at two dangerous areas where the devil seems particularly active. Sadly, many people even within the church are being deceived in these areas.

1. The Deception of Universalism

One of the most dangerous heresies creeping into the modern church is universalism. Some who began well by preaching the grace of God have now swerved into one ditch, teaching that everyone is saved whether they accept Christ or not.

Universalism claims that all humanity is already saved in Christ, whether believer or unbeliever, Christian or non-Christian. They often misuse 1 Corinthians 15:22:

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

In the surface, this seems convincing. They argue that just as all were condemned in Adam, so also all will be saved in Christ automatically. But this interpretation ignores the context of Scripture.

If we continue reading in verse 23 Paul clarifies:

But each one in his own order: Christ the first fruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.

The key phrase is those who belong to Christ. Not everyone belongs to Christ, only those who have believed in Him, received Him, and put their faith in Him. The all who shall be made alive are not the entire human race but all who are in Christ.

Scripture never teaches that salvation is automatic. The Bible consistently says:

Whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:12).

Salvation is not a blanket cover for all mankind irrespective of faith. It is a covenant gift received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. To teach otherwise is to cheapen grace and make the cross unnecessary.

Universalism may sound merciful, but in truth, it denies the very heart of the Gospel. It lulls people into complacency and strips away the urgency of repentance and faith in Jesus.

2 The Lie of Many Ways to God

Another heresy widely spread in our modern generation is the belief that there are many ways to God. This teaching says that Jesus is one way among many, and that other religions, prophets, and even idol gods can also lead a person to the true God.

It is often disguised under nice-sounding words like tolerance, oneness, and all faiths lead to the same God. But make no mistake, this is a direct contradiction of the Word of God.

Jesus Himself was clear:

I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6).

All things have been committed to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him (Matthew 11:27).

Only the Son reveals the Father. No other prophet, god, or religion can bring someone to the Father. If someone says otherwise, they are preaching another gospel.

To say there are many ways to God is to reject the uniqueness of Jesus Christ. It empties the cross of its meaning. If salvation could be obtained through any other god or system, why would Jesus suffer and die? Why would He declare Himself the only way?

The God of the Bible is not confused, and He does not contradict Himself. What He has revealed through His Son is final and absolute. Anything outside of Christ is deception.

Guarding Ourselves with the True Word

In both of these heresies, universalism and pluralism, the common factor is the twisting of God’s Word out of context. That is why believers must guard themselves by anchoring their faith in the Scriptures as they are written, not as men twist them.

Grace is not a license to believe anything you like. Grace is not freedom to live however you want. Grace is not a theological loophole that removes the need for faith in Christ.

Grace is a person, Jesus Christ. Grace empowers us to live the Christian life, to walk in holiness, and to remain faithful to the truth of God’s Word.

As Paul warned in Galatians 1:8–9, Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!

Let us therefore discern carefully, test every teaching, and hold fast to the truth revealed in Christ. For the devil’s traps may wear new clothing, but they are always the same old lies. Only the living Word of God, understood in its proper context, can keep us from falling into deception.

Reminder: Don’t be swayed by teachings that make the narrow way broad. Stand firm in the truth that salvation is only in Jesus Christ, received through faith, and that He alone is the way to the Father.
