The War Between Scripture and Man-Made Tradition

We are living in an extraordinary era, a generation where the Spirit of God is moving actively and powerfully across the earth. Yet, parallel to this spiritual awakening, we cannot deny a sobering reality: a massive wave of confusion and spiritual deception is simultaneously at work.

The enemy is operating on two distinct fronts. On one hand, the devil is subtly twisting the truth of God’s word, attempting to make sin look casual, progressive, and completely normal. On the other hand, he uses a far more deceptive tactic: leveraging religion and human tradition to manipulate sincere hearts. For many people in our world, the truth remains entirely unknown simply because no one has preached it to them, and they have never sought it out. But for others, the tragedy is deeper, they hear the exact truth of God, yet they ignore it, choosing instead to believe that their inherited opinions are the ultimate reality.

The Purpose and Authority of Scripture

Apostle Paul establishes an unshakeable boundary for believers in 2 Timothy 3:16-17:

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

The text is unambiguous: the entire Bible is literally the breath of God. It is explicitly designed not just to comfort us, but to teach, correct, and rebuke us. Yet, we live in a culture where many churchgoers have created a personal belief system that boldly declares, "No matter what the Bible says, it cannot correct me, and it will not rebuke my lifestyle."

While it is true that we are commanded not to walk in condemnation, we must understand that correction and holy rebuking are essential parts of Christian spiritual growth. If correction comes directly from the Word of God, we must humble ourselves before it. As the apostle Paul wrote in Romans, "Let God be true, and every human being a liar."

The true Gospel of Jesus Christ is clear and exclusive. Jesus explicitly stated, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Unfortunately, modern religious systems have completely distorted the belief systems of both the world and the church. We must remember that "unbelievers" are not merely those who worship literal idols; an unbeliever is anyone who is not born again. Being born into a Christian family or a specific heritage does not make you a believer, only being born again by the Spirit of God grants that identity.

Instead of evaluating our lives, cultures, and mindsets by the standard of Scripture, many today reverse the order. They judge the Word of God through the lens of their own cultural systems, trying to force the eternal Word to fit into temporary human molds. This compromise has been passed down through generations, until human tradition, religious identity, and old-school myths are given higher priority than the living Word of God.

The Echo of Matthew 23

Jesus’ fierce confrontation in Matthew 23:16-19 was not meant solely for the religious leaders of the first century; it echoes loudly down through history to our modern institutions:

"Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?"

While the modern church may not use these exact words, our behavioral patterns have not changed. Many church leaders today prioritize the preservation of their own cultural traditions and ethnic comfort zones over leading God's people into the true biblical unity and diversity found in Christ. We are not called to condemn our heritages, our cultures, or our unique backgrounds. Diversity is beautiful. But culture is never primary. God's Word and His redemptive plans are the ultimate priority.

Paul issued a terrifying warning against mixing the Gospel with anything else in Galatians 1:8:

"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!"

The Gospel of Jesus is beautifully straightforward: it centers entirely on God’s redemptive plan, beginning with Jesus and ending with Jesus. The Bible never once instructs us to follow Jesus through the filter of our unique traditions, tribal customs, or local religions. Following Jesus means doing it Jesus' way, as written in His Word, nothing added, nothing subtracted.

Real-World Deceptions:

To see how deeply these subtle deceptions have penetrated our daily lives, we only have to look at ordinary interactions within our communities.

I witnessed this firsthand in my office. A highly influential local figure, someone who holds a significant position of authority, has a niece who looks remarkably like her. One afternoon, this niece and her mother came into my office for some routine work. A man whom we all knew happened to be there, and he began speaking what sounded like spiritual wisdom, but was actually an ancestral myth.

He looked at the girl and said, "You look exactly like your aunt. Our forefathers always used to say that if you look similar to someone who is powerful and in authority, you will be highly blessed and live a very long life." Without hesitation, the mother and daughter smiled and replied, "Thank you so much! So be it according to your word."

I sat there astonished, thinking, “Hello? 'So be it according to his word?' and not according to God's word?” This family was completely deceived in that moment, accepting a declaration that has zero biblical backing. The man who spoke it is a regular, sincere, church-going devotee. Yet, his functional belief system is deeply corrupted because he isn't living by the scriptures; he is living by unbiblical myths passed down by ancestors.

I saw a similar pattern repeat itself with my own brother. We both attend a multi-ethnic church. A relative of ours, who is actively in the ministry within our traditional, single-community churches, approached my brother. He tried hard to persuade him, asking, "Why don't you leave that place and attend our community's traditional church instead?"

When my brother politely declined, stating he was well-fed and fine where he was, the minister tried a deeply emotional angle that almost shook my brother's resolve. He said, "Think deeply about it. A few generations down the line, your family will completely lose our culture and traditions. Your children won't even speak our native language. You need to preserve our heritage by coming back to our community church."

By God’s grace, my brother recognized the emotional manipulation and was not swayed.

This minister may have been entirely sincere in his emotions, but sincerity does not equal truth. His plea was based on human sentiment, not the way of God. We cannot compromise God's clear instructions for the sake of cultural preservation. No tradition, no culture, and no ethnic community sits above the authority of God's Word.

Preserving your culture as a matter of heritage is not a sin; it has its rightful place. However, judging the Word of God through the lens of cultural preservation is fundamentally unbiblical and deeply deceptive. Every single cultural practice we hold dear must be brought to the foot of Scripture and judged by the written Word.

Where Our Promises Truly Rest

We must look directly to Scripture to correct these subtle errors:

 * On Success: You will not be blessed or successful because you physically resemble a powerful aunt or grandmother. You will succeed because God is intrinsically good, and He delights in favoring His children. Look at the life of Joseph: Genesis 39:2 states, "The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master." Joseph’s success was entirely bound to the presence of God, not his DNA or physical appearance.

 * On Longevity: You will not live a long life because your family members hold secular authority or you look like them. You will live long because God has promised life to those who love Him. Psalm 91:1 records His covenant: "With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."

 * On Legacy: Attending an ethnic or traditional community church will never guarantee the preservation or security of your future generations. It is God alone who preserves families.

   * Deuteronomy 7:9: "Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments."

   * Psalm 103:17:"But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children."

   * Exodus 20:6:"...but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

The single, unchanging criteria for a blessed legacy is to love God and obey His commands, and those commands are found exclusively in the pages of Scripture, nowhere else.

The Ultimate Standard

Just as every river flows from a source, every spiritual blessing has a single beginning: the Person of Jesus Christ and His Gospel. Every single promise of God finds its "Yes" and its "Amen" in Jesus, not in our cultural traditions, our ancestral bloodlines, or our religious institutions.

As the body of Christ, we must commit ourselves to constantly, ruthlessly seeking the truth directly from God's Word. His Word provides the exact life and light required to expose the deceptions, darkness, and lies that the enemy tries to smuggle into our lives through religious tradition. When you actively know the truth, the truth sets you free. You will no longer have to strive under the heavy weight of human expectations; instead, you will flow seamlessly in the power of the Holy Spirit.
